Recently, cases of human metapneumovirus (hMPV) have been reported, starting with two newborns in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The latest case involves an 80-year-old man from Ahmedabad, Gujarat, who has asthma and was hospitalized after testing positive for hMPV.
His condition is currently stable. hMPV primarily affects older adults and infants, with symptoms ranging from mild to severe. In older individuals, symptoms may include cough, nasal congestion, sore throat, and shortness of breath, while infants may exhibit cold-like symptoms and can develop serious respiratory issues.
To prevent the spread of hMPV, individuals are advised to practice good hygiene, such as frequent handwashing and avoiding close contact with infected persons. It is also important to keep vulnerable populations away from crowded places and to seek medical attention if respiratory distress occurs.
