Technology innovation and economic expansion likely to curtail India’s transition to renewable energy, research suggests

India’s dependence on fossil fuels and non-renewable energy sources is increasing, making it a heavy importer of oil and coal, according to a new study. The study, published in the journal Energy, examines short-term and long-term factors affecting energy consumption in India, Asia’s third largest economy and third largest emitter of fossil fuels. The authors warn that without adequate measures to curtail carbon emissions,

India’s future in reducing carbon emissions by boosting its reliance on renewable energy is uncertain. The country’s failure to undergo the Renewable Energy Transition (RET) and poor state of infrastructure and insufficient financial investment are major constraining factors delaying the RET. In the short term, India may benefit from its integration with the world economy and financial globalization, but technological innovation could play a negative role in its attempts to lean more on clean energy. The scientists warn that the Indian government may need to import coal for generating electricity and meeting local energy demand.”
